Instructions: You are to interview two people and record their responses on this form. You should state their name and their comments to your solution to the identified problem.
VI. I interviewed two individuals to see what their response would be to my (our) plan. Their responses are as follows.
Neighbor: Tino
- He agreed that there was a problem, and something needed to be done. He liked the fact that this solution was easy to establish and could work well for smaller areas, but his main concern is that it would not really help for larger areas with more distributed illegals.
- Even though he liked the idea, he felt that a lot of people would react like they did for the Arizona law similar. People would feel it violated their rights and/or was discrimination, even though he was personally OK with it. Family friend: John
- He also agreed that there was a problem. He thought that this solution would only slightly help, but because it didn’t require a lot of money it was actually helpful.
- He was also concerned that police officers would not be able to identify who really was a citizen and who was not.
- Besides that concern, he did not see any problems with it. He said if people are really citizens they should not be offended by asking for proof, it is benefitting them in the end by improving what their taxes can do already for them.
VII. My (our) answer, based on our research, to their objections and concerns are:
Not very effective: This solution is meant to help the current situation, not solve it instantly. This solution will help the areas where it is needed most, such as border towns and towns with large illegal populations. This is not made to be a solution to illegal immigration, but it is meant to be an easy way to help the current situation and slow down the growth of the illegal population.
Discrimination: This bill would not endorse discrimination in any way. This bill is to help police act on what they already know, where illegal immigrants are. Instead of waiting for the government to step in (if they ever even get around to it) police can act fast and apprehend illegals.
Police not being able to identify: This is what the proposed training is for. It would make sure anyone allowed to question another person on their citizenship would be prepared and able to check for legal citizenship.
